Yoga Anatomy

with Andrew Olson • First Sunday of the month

This series of workshops is for teachers and students of yoga. Each session will focus on a particular posture or series of postures from an injury prevention perspective.

Safe and Strong Arm Balances
Do you love balancing on your hands?
 
This month we will dive into the world of arm balancing and look at how we can create strong and safe poses while using our hands on the mat.
 
Our wrists and shoulders are not designed for weight bearing the same way our knees and ankles are. So if we want to use them to balance on there are a few key points that will help minimise the chance for injury. 
 
We will start by looking at how to create strong muscular foundations at the hands and then see how recruiting the stabilising muscles around our shoulders can significantly change our experience of balancing on our arms during practice. 
 
Whether you want to build a stronger platform for your handstand practice or would like to find some more strength in your Vinyasa flows then this workshop is for you.

kinds of classes

Hatha

Traditional, alignment-based exploration of a full range of postures. Essentially, all physical practices of ‘yoga’ are called ‘hatha yoga’. Suitable for all levels.

Vinyasa

Flowing sequences based around Surya Namaskar (sun salutes). Working with breath to connect and discover. Suitable for those who have some yoga experience but accessible to everyone as modifications can be given.

Ashtanga

Based on the teaching of Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, this practice synchronises breath and bandhas (internal locks) with a progressive series of postures. Suited to those who have some experience and/or like to sweat.

Yang to Yin

Move and flow for the first hour of this class and enable a deep restorative state for the final half-hour – Delish!

Restorative / Yin

In our busy lives, it is imperative to balance and restore. This class is an opportunity to recover and rejuvenate – a vital and deeply effective practice. Suitable for all.

Align + Flow

A full class to move, breathe and enjoy! Based around a theme, idea, posture or set of postures including standing poses, backbends and inversions – all to a flowing, meditative breath. Variations given and class is modified to suit level of the students. 

Embodied Yoga

Flowing sequences designed to inhabit your body, free your mind and go within. Embodied Yoga blends hatha yoga, somatics, yogic psychology and deep embodied rest. Suitable for anyone able to move their body freely.

Acro Yoga

Combining yoga, acrobatics and Thai massage, Acro Yoga is super fun. You don’t need a partner or previous experience to join, just bring your sense of adventure and come learn how to fly!

As a physiotherapist, I love sharing my knowledge of the body and how we can develop a strong and durable practice. My aim is to help students develop a safe and confident practice where they understand their body on and off the mat. I love teaching slow and strong alignment based Hatha/Vinyasa style classes. You can expect a class that leaves your body feeling both challenged and nourished.
